Wild Rhodies

Proudly displayed at the National Quilt Museum Exhibit, 2017

Another forest quilt…yes I love them.  This time I wanted to capture the sight of rhododendrons along with the redwoods.  It required a photo taking excursion.  I have a patient husband!

The quilt is Mosaic picture pieced with applique details.

There are also heavy machine embroidery boughs in the trees.  34”x 65”

All wall hanging quilts have a “sleeve” attached at the top back.  This is used to insert a slat or curtain rod, for easy hanging.

Coastal Garden

Near our home we discovered a hidden away park of azaleas.  From the location we could see the Pacific Ocean in the background. I decided to use my new “Mosaic” method. With a twist of shaping the flowers and adding a few beads.  The print that I found is not azaleas, the has the “mood” of those flowers.

Cover Quilt of my first book

I LOVE the beach! Whenever we travel I just soak up the peaceful feelings as I view the splendor of creation.  This particular scene was in near a little town in Oregon.  I thought it might lend itself to my new “Mosaic” method.

The quilts and all pattern material were sent to Martingale for publishing and this is the quilt that they chose for the cover.  So it’s been seen far and wide-wherever quilt books are sold.

I decided recently to offer it for sale.

Mosaic picture quilts are made with many squares of cotton fabrics. Before the quilting process they are overlaid with fine netting (tulle). Machine quilted.

Grandma I Love Blue

88″ x 102″  Date: 2004

While my son, Danny’s, girls were still young, I thought it might be a good idea to make their “grown-up” quilts.  Making plans, I decided to ask about style and color and Christina said “Grandma, I Just Love Blue”.  So I began.  Because I had no time limit, I collected blues and made a block and stacked it away.  No pressure.  The collection grew and I finally decided it was time to assemble them. Each block is different and has 102 pieces.  I enjoyed the complexity of the pattern and the look of the final project.  It was several years before I was able to pass the quilt on to her, because she’d finally grown up!

A Time to Sow

We lived in the Midwest for several years and this scene is typical of the farmland, ready to go.

Pacific Beach

Pacific Beach

40″ wide x 30″ tall

One of our favorite places is “Dry Lagoon” on Hwy 101 north of Arcata, Ca.  The sand is all small rocks and some of them are agates.  We love to walk there and hunt for treasures.

I decided recently to offer it for sale.  It’s really a nice little quilt–or at least I think so.

Morning Light

Morning Light

40″ x 30″

When my “Mosaic” method was new, I experimented with all kinds of pictures.  This quilt is inspired by a photo taken out our patio window on a stunning morning.  Our house sits next to our church and the cross became the feature I most enjoyed in the picture.

When making my first book: “Mosaic Picture Quilts“; this quilt was featured as a pattern.

Rugged Beauty

This simple quilt was inspired by a photo taken by my son as he traveled to help out in the Katrina disaster.  I loved the rugged feel.

The quilt really is a silhouette of the mountain on a sky background

It is made in the Mosaic method with cotton fabrics and a tulle overlay. It is machine quilted.

Rugged Coast Quilt

Rugged Coast

18″ wide x 26″ tall

Our California North Coast is a beautiful place.  This small quilt is a taste of the rugged coast.

Techniques: Painted with acrylic fabric paints on cotton, Warm cotton batting,  and then heavily quilted with Superior threads. The edge treatment is bound with a commercial print.

Miniature Redwood

I decided to make a tiny quilt from one of the photos we took at Richardson’s Grove recently.  I enjoyed it so much I decided to make a large quilt (Majestic Redwoods)

The quilt is Mosaic pieced with a tulle overlay.  It is heavily machine quilted.

Here’s a close up of the stitching – extra threadwork to resemble the boughs.
