I was asked to participate in the Inspired by Libby exhibit/auction as described below:
Inspired By Libby
Libby Lehman, a beloved woman, wife, mother, talented quilter, teacher, and artist is struggling with multiple medical issues. Her personality and sense of humor is leading the charge for recovery. Team Libby and her quilting friends are her support through this time. What’s left? Well, what do quilters do at times like this? Make quilts. An invitation was sent out last fall to award winning quilters and teachers to create a 30x30 quilt inspired by one of Libby’s quilts, to be auctioned off to aide the family with the medical bills.
This unique collection will be on display at the International Quilt Show in Houston late October, 2014. Two quilts will be up for a silent auction at the show. The collection will be up for an online auction for everyone to bid on. The auction info to be announced September on thequiltshow.com. The exhibit will then go to the American Quilter’s Society Paducah Show in April, 2015. After this, they will be shipped to their new owner to be enjoyed.
“Light as Air” was inspired by Libby’s quilts as well as her bubbling personality. Many of her quilts use bright colors, so I started with a really bright fabric that had a suggestion of a sun in the corner. Transparent organza fabric overlays are also evident in some of her work, so I used several pieces and lapped them over each other. Then of course, thread play—the largest balloon’s ribbon is inspired by her many ribbon quilts.
I hope you enjoy this “light hearted” quilt and can see the connection to Libby’s artistry.
