Pat Durbin is an award-winning quilt artist who uses unique textiles techniques to create quilts from photos. Pat has had her quilts featured in quilt museums, has won numerous quilt awards, and is author of five quilting books.

Since 2005, Pat Durbin has been making art quilts that resemble paintings.  She find this to be filled with challenges and rewards. Pat has sewn clothes since childhood but now spends most of her sewing time making quilted art.  Using photography as inspiration and various techniques, Pat makes quilted fine art scenes.  Her style is to quilt my art on her home sewing machine.  She has done portraits as well as many landscapes. Redwood Arts Association in Eureka is having an exhibit called Beyond the Page until Dec 12.

"Garden Green" is my entry, a painted piece which is heavily quilted and the bottom is shaped to resemble a leaf, with a tiny piping accent.         Award of Merit

Across F street at the Morris Graves Museum is another exhibit from Nov. 29 - Jan. 4. There you can see what I call "Cat Tails". It has a woven sky, Mosaic pieced ground, and a painted tiger with heavy embroidery. It is also heavily quilted and has a shaped edge with tiny piping accenting the binding.

Step 6 flower construction

Well, the quilting is complete and I've begun the process of making flowers.  I've been afraid to count them but I think there are hundreds! So I'm beginning with several "white on white" fabrics.  I like to have variety so they'll look like individual blooms. ...

Step 5 Dogwood quilting

Just so you know...I often have ideas about how to construct a quilt that may or may not be a help to me.  This particular quilt is quite long and narrow.  I decided to do some preliminary quilting on it to stabalize the piece and...

step 4 dogwood

I decided to piece a section that will go behind a heavily flowered section.  I think it will keep me from having to make as many applique pieces.  I did strips and then cut them with a 4 1/2" square on angles. I placed them...
